Drain Cleaning vs. Hydro Jetting: Which Does Your Home Need?

When a drain backs up, homeowners often hear two terms thrown around: drain cleaning and hydro jetting. While both solve clogged drains, they work in completely different ways. Knowing the difference between drain cleaning vs hydro jetting helps you choose the right solution for your home's specific problem.
At Pro Boyz, we use both methods regularly—sometimes on the same day. The question isn't which is "better." It's which is right for your situation. Here's how each works, when to use each one, and why older Yonkers homes often need one method over the other.
What a Standard Drain Snake (or Auger) Does
A drain snake, also called an auger, is a mechanical device—essentially a cable with a coil or blade at the end. A plumber feeds it down the pipe, and as it rotates, it either breaks apart the clog or hooks it so it can be pulled back out.
Snakes work well for straightforward problems: a ball of hair in the bathroom drain, a small food blockage in the kitchen sink, or soap buildup in a single fixture. They're fast, effective for localized clogs, and they're the first tool we reach for in many situations.
However, snakes have limits. They can't clean the entire pipe wall—they just punch through the obstruction. If your pipes have heavy buildup, mineral deposits, or tree roots, a snake might clear the immediate clog but won't address the underlying problem. When multiple drains back up simultaneously, it signals an issue deeper in the main line—a snake won't fix that.
What Hydro Jetting Does
Hydro jetting uses pressurized water—typically in the 3,000–4,000 PSI range—to scour the inside of pipes. Instead of breaking through a clog, the jet essentially cleans the entire pipe wall, removing buildup, cutting through roots, and flushing debris.
Think of it like the difference between poking a hole through ice and melting the whole surface. Hydro jetting doesn't just solve the immediate blockage; it removes years of accumulated grease, mineral deposits, and scale. For properties with root intrusion into the sewer line, hydro jetting can cut roots back and restore better flow—though it won't stop roots from growing back eventually.
Hydro jetting is also gentler on older pipes than you might think. Modern equipment is calibrated carefully, and our team assesses your pipe material and condition before starting. It's an excellent preventative tool: many plumbers recommend hydro jetting during routine maintenance to keep systems flowing smoothly for years.
When to Choose Each
A simple clog (one drain, obvious cause).
If your bathroom sink is backed up and you can see hair in the trap, a snake is probably all you need. It's faster and less costly. Simple hairballs and minor food blockages respond well to snaking.
Kitchen drain with years of grease buildup.
If your kitchen sink drains slowly even after snaking, or backs up repeatedly, you likely have stubborn grease coating the pipe walls. Hydro jetting is the right choice here. The high-pressure water dissolves and flushes out grease that a snake can't reach.
Main sewer line with tree roots.
If multiple drains back up at once—toilets, showers, and sinks all draining poorly—the problem is usually downstream in your main line. A drain snake won't solve this. We'll often use a sewer camera to inspect, locate roots, and then hydro jet to cut them back and restore flow.
Multiple drains backing up slowly.
When the whole house shows signs of slow drainage, a camera inspection comes first. This tells us whether the issue is localized or widespread. If it's widespread, hydro jetting is the answer.
Why Older Yonkers Homes Often Need Hydro Jetting
Yonkers has a lot of character—and that includes homes built 50, 75, even 100+ years ago. Many properties in Park Hill, Nodine Hill, and around Getty Square have cast iron drain lines. Cast iron corrodes over time, becoming rough inside. That rough surface traps grease, soap, and other debris far more than smooth modern PVC.
Additionally, older clay tile laterals (the line from the house to the main sewer) are common in this area. Clay is porous and can be invaded by tree roots seeking moisture. Mature trees on Yonkers properties—some of which have been there for decades—can work their roots into these lines, causing recurring backups.
For older homes, a single snaking often provides only temporary relief. Hydro jetting addresses the root cause: cleaning away corrosion, removing root intrusion, and restoring the pipe to better working condition. It's why we recommend it frequently for our Park Hill and Nodine Hill customers.
How to Decide
Start with an inspection. If it's a single slow drain with an obvious cause, snaking might be enough. If you have recurring problems, multiple slow drains, or an older home with a history of backups, call a professional.
We recommend a sewer camera inspection for any recurring issue. It takes the guesswork out of diagnosis and shows you exactly what's happening in your pipes. From there, we can recommend whether drain cleaning, hydro jetting, or both will solve your problem.
